| What is the Taiwan Question all About? |

The so-called Taiwan question covers the following three aspects:
1. The Taiwan question was left over from a civil war in China and is, therefore, purely an internal affair of China's. On October 1, 1949 the People's Republic of China was founded. After the defeat of the Kuomintang in the civil war, a group of military officers and political figures of the party took refuge in Taiwan and, with support from the US government, held power in Taiwan with military force. Therefore, the Taiwan question is a matter between the government of the People's Republic of China, the sole legitimate government of China with Beijing as its capital, and the Taiwan authorities. It is a matter to be settled by Chinese on both sides of the Taiwan Straits themselves.
2. The Taiwan question is a matter that concerns the safeguarding of China's national sovereignty, territorial integrity and national dignity and opposition to foreign intervention by the Chinese Government and the Chinese people. The US government should strictly abide by the principles of the three Sino-US joint communiques and completely correct and stop its erroneous activities of interfering in China's internal affairs and obstructing a peaceful reunification of China by playing the Taiwan card.
3. The essence of the Taiwan question is a struggle between splittism and anti-splittist efforts, and between "Taiwan independence" and anti-"Taiwan independence." The focus of the matter is a struggle between "one China" and "two Chinas." The Chinese Government and the Chinese people stand firm on the "one China" principle. They are resolutely opposed to any conspiracies designed to split China's territorial integrity and national sovereignty and any attempt to create "two Chinas," "one China, one Taiwan" or achieve "Taiwan independence."
